Dear Parents of a Rising 6th Grader,
Shortly, your family will be going through an incredible transition . . . one of your own will become a Jr. Higher! Some of you have already navigated these strange waters, while others are getting ready to experience this wild ride for the first time. Either way, we are very excited to welcome you and your child to the Jr. High ministry at Highlands.
Promotion Sunday is August 10th @ 9:30am. This is the Sunday where all children will move up into their new Sunday school class, and your CHILD officially becomes…(drum roll please)...a YOUTH! Please come to the youth building with your 6th grader. Mysie and I will be outside on the deck to greet you, answer questions, get your phone #, and give you information. It will only take a minute. The youth building is located behind the church and we call it “The U” primarily because it is shaped like a U. It’s also short for “The Youth”. We are so smart. :-)
6th Grade Parent + Student Picnic @ Liberty Park on August 13th, 6 - 7:30pm. We will meet near the playground at Liberty Park in Madison for games + food. Everyone bring either an appetizer or a dessert. We will provide pizza and drinks (plates, forks, napkins, etc). Feel free to bring your other children along. The playground will be close by.
When I think of Jr. High, one word comes to mind: CHANGE. Over the next three years, your sons and daughters will go through some exciting, interesting, amazing, and yes, frustrating changes. Here are just a few to look forward to:
Social Changes: Peers become a much bigger influence than in the past
Physical Changes: Puberty - awkward heights, awkward bodies, awkward voices
Intellectual Changes: More abstract thinking and even more questioning authority
Spiritual Changes: We see the beginnings of - them taking ownership of the Faith, understanding at a deeper level, applying knowledge to life, and more questioning
With all the change going on, it will be of great benefit for your new 6th grader to be regularly involved in our youth ministry. Youth Group will start August 20th, and small groups on September 7th. Just like anything, the more they show up, the more comfortable they will be, so encourage them to come early and often. We are looking forward to partnering with you in the discipleship of your child. If we can be of any specific assistance to you, please let us know.
Parents, you are ALWAYS welcomed in The U (no matter what your child says)! Please call Devin if you will not be able to make it to Promotion Sunday or the 6th Grade Picnic.
